Managing Conflict (training for managers and team leaders)

Managing Conflict effectively means having to ‘grasp the nettle’ when team members fall out with each other. Many Managers and Team Leaders lack the confidence to challenge the problem and prefer to ignore it in the hope that it will simply go away.

Unfortunately disputes often thrive when ignored by management and escalate until the whole team is affected. Then a particularly nasty situation has to be tackled, often requiring the intervention of a Senior Manager or external Mediator.

This can be avoided by helping Managers and Team Leaders to deal with the problem themselves.

Just Solutions offers training to support Managers and Team Leaders in both recognising emergent conflict within their team, and developing the skills and knowledge to intervene early. Knowing what to do, how to do it, and having the necessary confidence to act, will allow Managers and Team Leaders to step into any conflict situation arising within the team and simply ‘nip it in the bud’.

The Conflict Management training programme includes:

    • Understanding Conflict.
    • Recognising a serious conflict situation.
    • Planning an appropriate conflict management strategy.
    • The phases of conflict resolution.
    • Logistical considerations.
    • Preparing the environment.
    • Conflict Management skills.
    • Case studies and practical experience.
    • Individual feedback and Personal Development Plans.
Effectively managed conflict actually strengthens the leader’s position within a team and serves to demonstrate to all the members that dysfunctional behaviour is neither accepted nor tolerated. This strong message supports the Manager or Team Leader’s influence in all other aspects of team or individual performance management, and encourages an environment in which the team can work harmoniously and productively together.

The course contains a mix of theory and practice, but the emphasis is on developing appropriate skills for workplace mediation with the aim of enabling Managers and Team Leaders to resolve conflict in its early stages. It can be condensed into one-day, but we would recommend additional time (another half or whole day) for delegates to get the full benefit from a guided opportunity to practice their skills and receive individual feedback on their performance from their peers and tutors.
